Maxing our New York Minutes

It’s amazing how many things you can see and do in a New York minute. Last week, my mom and I enjoyed 48 hours of them, during which we saw a Broadway show (naturally), munched giant deli sandwiches, strolled through Central Park, toured the Wall Street Journal, visited Ground Zero, enjoyed the new Through the Looking Glass and Van Gogh exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, had dinner at an Iron Chef’s restaurant, caught a little live music, and saw my son Charlie in action during a taping of the Meredith Vieira Show.

Whew.

At least two of those outings require their own posts.

Consider this the overview, in which we celebrate Manhattan and all its cheesecakey glory.

My favorite New York moments are the quiet ones — the St. Patrick’s Cathedral candle, the early morning jog through a yawning zoo, the late night photo walk, the Winslow Homer painting, toy sailboats on a pond.

My favorite New York moments are also the loud ones — the Times Square hawkers, Broadway musicals, food carts, street musicians, animated cab drivers.

The best of my favorite New York moments happened at 6:30 Tuesday evening, when we caught site of Charlie ambling through a crowded Rock Center Café on his way to meet us.

We made the most of our 48 hours in New York and our brief visit with Charlie.

Enjoy these pictures of our quick trip through the city that never sleeps.

Beautiful

If you get a chance to see Beautiful, take it. We really enjoyed this musical biography of the prolific song writer Carole King.

Breezy Met Picture

Charlie and I took a moment to enjoy the breezy Metropolitan Museum of Art roof.

Mollys prom dress

And, as luck would have it, we found Molly’s prom dress for next year there.

Through the Looking Glass

The rest of the China: Through the Looking Glass exhibit was incredible as well.

Deli sandwich

You can’t beat a New York deli sandwich.

Charlie and Ty

We got to see Charlie and his friend and fellow producer Ty at work and we really enjoyed seeing a taping of the Meredith Vieira Show.

Visiting Charlie

Here we are in the door of Charlie’s office in 30 Rock.

Commuter

A stylish commuter.

Mounted police

Mounted police.

New York Cheesecake

Cheesecake!

Hell's Kitchen

Hell’s Kitchen. I’m a big fan of New York food carts, so the irony of this picture, in which the light forms a heart and the scrolling letters say Hell, intrigued me.

Rockefeller Plaza

A view of Rockefeller Plaza at night.

St. Patrick's Cathedral

St. Patrick’s Cathedral at night. That door is always open!

Peggy shrugged

I always make people shrug in front of the Atlas sculpture. Here is my mom giving it an early morning, half-hearted try.

St. Benjamins

St. Benjamin’s at night. I love the variety of New York architecture.
