How to Succeed at Show Business by Really Trying

Want to see a group of creative people pool their talents to build something truly magical? Head to your nearest community theatre.
You’ll find a joyous passion there among folks who happily dedicate precious summer weekends and evenings to turn words into theatre.
A tradition thousands of years old comes to life each time an actor takes the stage. Behind each actor stands a crew of set builders, painters, sewers, promoters, runners, photographers, janitors, craft service people, make-up artists, light boys, stagehands and sound technicians. In community theatre, though, the actor often also is the painter, runner, make-up artist, etc.
In some ways, the purest form of theatre is community theatre because volunteers do so much of the work and all of the acting.
As our television screens grow enormous and our entertainment venues shrink we’re so fortunate that live theatre has survived. Consider the options available to today’s youth — spend an evening hunched over a smart phone listening to a recorded podcast, or take a seat in a theatre to watch a live performance full of color, emotion, movement, fallibility and courage.
Like high school theatre, community theatre offers all of this at a fraction of the cost.
Attic Theatre, our local community theatre, is capping off a very successful summer season with a well-known musical we know you’ll all enjoy. How to Succeed at Business Without Really Trying wraps up its run beginning tonight through Saturday night at 7 p.m. with a matinée on Sunday at 2 p.m.
If you’re in the Appleton area, treat yourself to this wonderful show. If you can’t get to Appleton, check out the local theatre performances in your area.
Step into a theatre and enjoy the rich spectacle of an art form as old as time and of participants whose singular motivation lies in a desire to entertain.

Molly and I popped by one afternoon to help paint sets. I walked in from the sunny parking lot and nearly walked into the wrong door, onto the set of a live play, which would have been quite mortifying, but I startled stage hand steered me in the right direction.
